When a horse can't work

A horse is lame, away or has worked enough today: mark it and swap it on today's rides.

When a horse can't work (it's lame, it's away from the yard, or it has done enough for today), take it off its rides and put another horse in its place. Nose suggests a replacement for each ride. You check the suggestions and confirm.

Admins and instructors can do this.

Take the horse off and swap it

  1. Only tired for today? Skip to step 7. Otherwise open Horses and find the horse. Click its status in the row, or at the top of its panel.
  2. Pick Sick or Resting, or External if the horse is away from the yard.
  3. If riders are booked on the horse for later today, a window lists those rides, each with a suggested replacement. Switch to This week to cover its rides up to Sunday too. If nobody is booked on it for the rest of today, the status simply changes and you can carry on.
  4. Go through the rides. Keep the suggestion, pick another horse from the ride's list, or tick Skip this ride to leave it as it is for now. A horse marked Restricted needs a short reason.
  5. Click Apply all. The riders move to their new horses and the status changes. I will do it manually changes the status only and leaves every ride for you to sort out.
  6. When the horse is fit or back at the yard, set its status to Active again.
  7. To swap a horse on a single ride, leave its status alone. Open Schedule, click the ride, go to Allocate & Settle, click the rider's horse and pick another one. In the day view you can also drag the rider onto another horse's row.

If something's off

  • No suggestion on a ride: no free horse suits it. Pick one from the list yourself, or tick Skip this ride and deal with it on the ride: another horse, another time for the rider, or a cancellation. See Cancellations and no-shows.
  • Rides after this week, or no window at all: the window only covers today or the rest of this week, and only opens when the horse still has a ride today. Swap any other rides one by one, as in step 7. In the day view they show the horse as unavailable, so they are easy to find.
  • The horse you want is over its work limit: when you swap on a ride or drag in the day view, Nose asks before assigning it. Click Assign anyway if that's fine, or Cancel and choose another horse. In the status window, each horse shows how much it has worked next to its name instead. Nose only asks while Warn before going over is on in Settings → Horses.
  • The horse is back sooner than expected: set it to Active. Rides you already swapped keep the replacement horse. If you want the old pairing back, change it on each ride, and the rider is told again.

What happens by itself

  • Every rider you move (or their parent) gets an email naming their new horse. Riders who use the app get a notification too.
  • When you swap through the status window, the ride's instructor gets a notification that the horse is unavailable and which horse replaced it, unless they made the change themselves.
  • Until the horse is Active again, it isn't offered when you pick horses for a ride.
  • The status change is added to the horse's History.
