Set up your boarding barn

Move a whole boarding barn into Nose in five steps: rules, plans, prices, your list of horses and owners, then a preview and one press to go live.

Moving a boarding barn into Nose takes five steps: your billing rules, your plans, your service prices, the list of horses and who pays, then a preview and one press to go live. Nothing is sent to owners before that press. It all starts on the Boarding page, which only admins and managers see.

Start the setup

Turn on Enable the boarding module in Settings → Boarding if it isn't on yet. Then open Boarding and click Set up boarding. Once you've started, a notice at the top of the Boarding page shows how far you are, and Continue takes you back to the next step. Finish later keeps everything you've done.

Already billing contracts in Nose? Then the setup isn't offered: add a group of horses from Settings → Boarding → Add horses from a sheet, the same list and preview as below.

The five steps

  1. Billing rules — when a month is charged, the day it's due and how a part month is counted. Each choice saves as you make it; Next confirms them. What each rule means is in Plans, contracts & charges.
  2. Plans — your boarding packages, each with a monthly price and, if you like, a day rate. Every horse on your list needs one.
  3. Services & prices — the extras you charge for. The sheet lists your services with their prices, and one column per plan: check what a plan includes. Suggested services stay grayed out as Suggestion until you type a price.
  4. Horses & owners — one row per horse: the horse, the Owner (pays), their email and phone, the Plan, In boarding since and Bill from. If the owner owes you money or has paid ahead on the day you start, fill in Owes you or Paid ahead. If you already hold their deposit, put it under Deposit held. Rows are checked as you type, and the Status column says Ready, how many things are to fix, or Check.
  5. Preview & go live — see what going live will do, answer its questions, then press Go live.

You can move between steps freely, but the preview opens only once the billing rules are confirmed, there is a plan and at least one horse is ready.

Paste your list instead of typing it

On Horses & owners, click Paste from spreadsheet. Copy the rows in Excel or Google Sheets, header row included, and paste them in. Nose matches your columns to its own; check each one under Goes into, or choose Ignore for a column you don't need. Click Add, and the rows land on the list as drafts. Up to 500 rows go in at a time.

Before you go live

The preview shows how many contracts start, what is billed and whether anything would be overdue on day one. Horse by horse lists each first charge. It may ask you:

  • When billing starts for horses that arrived before next month: bill the rest of this month, or start next month. One answer covers them all.
  • When owners get their invitation: at go-live, or later, once you've told them yourself.
  • To confirm owners who will owe you from day one, when your settings don't yet allow that for them. Click Go live anyway for each one you're happy with.

Opening balances and deposits already held are recorded without any email to the owner. An opening balance is not counted as revenue.

If something's off

  • A row says "Check". The horse or the email matches one you already have. Choose Same horse: use it (or Same person: link), or Add as new. Until you choose, the row doesn't go live.
  • Rows past your subscription's limit. They stay on the list as drafts. Upgrade subscription, or Keep as drafts and add them later.
  • Some rows didn't go live. Each one says why on the list. Fix it there and click Go live with the rest: nothing is created twice.
  • Going live stopped half-way. Open the page again and press Go live again. It carries on where it stopped.

What happens by itself

  • From that night on, charges follow your billing rules, as for any contract.
  • Owners with an email get their invitation and see their horse under My horses once they sign in.
  • The setup steps stay in Settings → Boarding, one page at a time. Add horses from a sheet there brings a later group of horses in the same way.
